'They live through all the positive actions they did' | 3 Indy community leaders killed by gun violence within a year

"They weren't in the streets. They weren't doing dumb stuff. They were uplifting their community and they didn't deserve to go out like that," said Tevin Studdard.

INDIANAPOLIS — George Nelson Sr., Ron Gee, and Mike Treez.

Three men with a similar mission: Bettering their community.

"They live through all the positive actions they did," said Tevin Studdard, a fellow activist.

Nelson was shot and killed outside his restaurant, Pa and Ma's Backyard BBQ, Wednesday night on the city's northwest side.

Gee was gunned down in the parking lot of a gas station on the city's east side in July.

And Treez was shot to death in a triple shooting nearly a year ago at 37th and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. streets.

"They weren't in the streets. They weren't doing dumb stuff. They were uplifting their community and they didn't deserve to go out like that," said Studdard.

Activist Tevin Studdard speaks with 13News reporter Chase Houle, Friday, Aug. 23, 2024 in Indianapolis.

Studdard said he was really good friends with Treez and Nelson. He even featured Nelson in one of the books he created.

"This was a positive man, making a business, employing people from the community and uplifting the community, so just to have that stripped is just crazy because people can't control their emotions," explained Studdard.

Studdard said seeing these men die by the very thing they were trying prevent can have someone second guess their purpose.

George Nelson Sr., owner of Pa & Ma's Backyard BBQ, was killed in a shooting near West 26th and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. streets Aug. 21, 2024.

"I mean, it makes you think twice. For real, because we all got children and families that we want to make it home to, so you just do a lot of questioning," said Studdard.

But for Rev. Charles Harrison with the Indianapolis Ten Point Coalition, these men being killed needs to be a wake up call to the people of Indianapolis.

"I'm not for sure on how we stop this if we don't get our arms around this as a city and try to help people resolve these conflicts without using violence to do so," Harrison said.

IMPD says they have arrested a person in connection with Nelson's death.

As for who killed Mike Treez and Ron Gee, police are still searching for their killers.
