MARTINSVILLE, Ind. — Police in Martinsville are investigating after two people were shot and a third person was injured Saturday night.
According to a release from the Martinsville Police Department, police were called to the area of South Home Avenue and East South Street on a report of a shooting around 12:10 a.m. June 23.
When officers arrived, they found a 19-year-old man and a 15-year-old boy with gunshot wounds. Both victims were treated at the scene until an ambulance arrived.
The teenager was airlifted to a hospital in Indianapolis in critical condition. The man was also taken to an Indianapolis hospital, and his condition was said to be "stable."
During the investigation, police later found a third victim, identified only as a juvenile male, who had sustained graze wounds. The juvenile victim was not taken to a hospital, according to police.
Police said 21-year-old Damien Hines, of Martinsville, was quickly identified as the alleged shooter and was later booked at the Morgan County Jail.
According to court documents, Hines told Morgan County sheriff's deputies that police officers were at his home a week prior due to the same people causing problems with him. Hines allegedly said the following night, his car was covered with cheese and eggs.
Late in the evening of June 22, Hines told detectives that the three people yelled at him as he got out of a car. According to Hines, the 19-year-old allegedly told him, "I will slit your throat, b****."
According to court documents, Hines said he fired a warning shot at the ground as the three people were coming toward him and allegedly said they were going to jump him.
Hines allegedly said two of the males took off running, but the 19-year-old stayed there, so Hines said he aimed the gun at the 19-year-old and fired multiple shots.
After speaking with Hines, multiple victims and witnesses, prosecutors filed formal charges against Hines for three counts of criminal recklessness committed with a deadly weapon and one count of battery with a deadly weapon.
Hines made his first appearance in court Monday afternoon.
"I honestly thought (my son) was dead"
Korben Kindred's dad, Jessie, said he never thought he'd see his son being wheeled off on a stretcher.
"I just lost my mind. My brain just went blank. I just started crying. I got mad. I couldn't even tell you my name at that point in time," Jessie said.
According to Jessie, his 15-year-old son was shot just down the street from where they live.
"I got about 80 feet down the street, and it was chaos. I saw a pool of blood and my son laying in it, and I honestly thought he was dead," Jessie said.
According to Jessie, Korben was shot in the groin, and the bullet went through his bladder, intestines and struck an artery.
"I found out today that he's going to have to be one a day, I guess, baby aspirin to prevent blood clots – he's 15 years old – for the rest of his life," Jessie said.
As of Monday evening, Korben is still in the hospital, where he'll likely stay for the next two weeks.
