BEECH GROVE, Ind. — A teenager is facing felony charges, accusing him of shooting a man at a Beech Grove gas station after the suspect was allegedly caught stealing.
A 21-year-old man told 13News he was shot in the face while visiting a Marathon gas station after work shortly before 2 p.m. on Jan. 12. He was unable to speak to 13News in-person because he said he's still recovering and his jaw is wired shut.
Surveillance video shows the victim enter the store. According to court documents, walking in right behind him was 19-year-old Cameron Maidwell, who was wearing a ski mask.
Police say Maidwell admitted to investigators he was there to steal vapes. You can see him rifling though the selection moments after he enters the store. The victim sees the theft and attempts to stop it, getting into a scuffle with Maidwell before Maidwell allegedly pulls out a gun. Then, the victim attempts to flee.
Court records show Maidwell fired six shots at the victim, hitting him in the face once.
The victim tells 13News he played dead so he wouldn't get shot again, but court records say Maidwell kicked him in the back and pistol-whipped him in the head before returning to the store and allegedly stealing vapes. Then, surveillance video shows the suspect flee the scene.
The victim told 13News he got into his own car and drove to his girlfriend's house. She drove him to a hospital.
Maidwell was arrested nearby the same day. He allegedly admitted to shooting the victim and kicking and hitting him after he was shot.
The victim said he is now out of the hospital.
Maidwell is charged with aggravated battery and is currently being held at the Marion County jail on an $80,000 surety bond.
