INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana State Police is investigating after a Southport police officer shot a suspect after they fired their weapon during a chase on Indy's south side early Monday morning.

Just before 12:30 a.m. Oct. 28, the officer attempted a traffic stop near the entrance to the Berkley Commons apartment complex, off Madison Avenue just south of East Stop 11 Road. The suspect fled and and led the officer into the complex to the 2000 block of Appleton Drive.

That's when the driver then got out of the car and fled on foot near Madison Avenue and East Stop 11 Road.

ISP believes the suspect fired at least one shot during the chase — leading the officer to fire his weapon at the suspect.

The driver was taken into custody moments later and transported to a local hospital with a gunshot wound. His injuries are believed to be non-life threatening. ISP says he is now also under arrest for outstanding warrants.

No officers or other citizens were injured in the incident.

ISP says the officer involved was equipped with a body camera and it was activated during the incident.

The Marion County Prosecutor's Office will making charging decisions in the case.
