IMPD: Suspect in custody after shooting at officers during 7-hour standoff on Indy's east side

The incident started around 10 p.m. Wednesday in the 200 block of South Gladstone Avenue, near Sherman Drive and East Washington Street.

INDIANAPOLIS — A 45-year-old man is in custody after he allegedly fired shots at officers during an almost seven-hour standoff with police inside of an east Indianapolis home Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

Around 10 p.m. Nov. 6, officers responded to a report of a man armed with a gun inside of a home in the 200 block of South Gladstone Avenue, near Sherman Drive and East Washington Street.

According to IMPD, a woman told officers that the suspect threatened her with a gun inside the home and told her that he would kill her if she attempted to leave.

Officers arrived and found the woman near the intersection of Brookville Road and South Gladstone Avenue, who told them the man was still inside the home with a gun.

After the suspect refused to exit the home peacefully, IMPD requested a SWAT team and detectives to respond to the incident.

Officers used flashbangs and other tactical equipment before making their way inside moments later. Upon entering the house, police said the suspect began to shoot a gun at officers.

IMPD says the man continued to fire the gun during the incident. Officers took him into custody around 4:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, and he was taken to Eskenazi Hospital in "good condition."

Police later arrested the suspect on preliminary charges of criminal recklessness, intimidation with a deadly weapon and pointing a firearm. The Marion County Prosecutor's Office will make the final charging decisions.
