INDIANA, USA — Indiana State Police assisted multiple school corporations in response to a series of alleged bomb threats that were sent via email early Monday morning.
ISP confirmed to 13News its personnel assisted multiple local law enforcement agencies in response to the threats. At least two northern Indiana schools were evacuated in Adams and Cass counties, although ISP did not provide clarification on which specific schools were threatened.
Zionsville Community Schools were included in the bomb threat, although students have yet to return to class from winter break. They are scheduled to return Tuesday, Jan. 9.
A school official told 13News the school was searched and cleared:
"Earlier today, ZCS, along with multiple school districts state-wide, did receive a mass email warning that explosives had been placed in district school buildings. We take all threats seriously and acted immediately with support from the Zionsville Police Department (ZPD), Boone County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO), and the Indiana State Police (ISP). All ZCS buildings were searched and cleared.
We always follow the lead of state and local law enforcement officials and remain vigilant to all safety concerns that may impact our staff, students, and families. School district leaders and the ZCS internal safety team review each situation individually and work with public safety officials to determine the proper course of action. All staff and families were notified."
Further clarification on the bomb threat reports were reiterated on social media by Adams Central Community Schools, a public school system in Monroe, Indiana, who first posted about the threat at 11:26 a.m. on Jan. 8.
Language from that email allegedly stated, "There are explosives inside every school in your district."
Adams Central posted around 5:25 p.m. on Monday evening that local law enforcement agencies had checked and cleared the Adam Central building and grounds.
Students and staff will return to Adams Central on Tuesday, the school corporation confirmed in the post.
School officials further said they believed the threat was an attempt to disrupt school services.
Adams Central also claimed about 70 school districts were impacted throughout the state. 13News is working to confirm which other central Indiana schools may have been impacted by the alleged threat.
