Resident of Speedway Woods neighborhood fed up with months of stolen mail

Linda Haley said someone is going around stealing mail in Speedway neighborhoods and even caught the perpetrator on camera, but no arrests have been made.

SPEEDWAY, Ind. — Linda Haley knows almost everyone in the Speedway Woods neighborhood. She takes care of some of the children during the day and picks them up from the school bus.

"I help moms out, I'm just paying it forward," Haley said.

She said this is a quiet neighborhood and everyone keeps an eye on each other. One day, when walking some of the kids down her street, she noticed all of the mailboxes were open.

"That didn't click right away until I got a package stolen," Haley said.

Her home security camera caught a person going into her mailbox. After a couple of days, other neighbors started to talk about their mail being stolen. This has been happening for a couple months now.

Haley tried different ways to stop this person, but nothing has worked.

"I put a note on my mailbox that says, 'I have you on my video, so do the police, this is a federal crime, stop,'" Haley said.

Neighbors have said that this is not only happening in Speedway Woods, but in surrounding neighborhoods. Haley said they have filed reports with the police and USPS, but have not gotten a response.

"We are aware of mail thefts occurring in the Speedway area," according to a statement from USPS. "We work closely with our law enforcement officers to investigate these offenses."

13News has reached out to police on an update of these reports and have not received a response.

"Get your mail, and be vigilant," Haley said.

Haley hopes while her neighbors have to wait for the person to be caught, other neighborhoods are already prepared if this happens to them.
