Sparks fly from stolen truck as police pursue wanted person across Indiana border

Dayton police began chasing the pickup truck after learning it had been reported stolen. One officer was injured as the pursuit began, authorities said.

WAYNE COUNTY, INDIANA, Ind. — Sparks were flying on Interstate 70 in eastern Indiana Wednesday as police chased a truck that had been reported stolen.

Ohio officers began the chase in Dayton, and they eventually crossed the Indiana border.

It was all captured on a squad car's dash-mounted camera.

Officers pulled over the truck to investigate a report that it had been stolen, a spokesperson said. Police said they learned the driver was being sought on multiple warrants.

Dayton police said the driver fled the traffic stop and hit and injured an officer. A pursuit that lasted a half-hour ensued.

The driver didn't stop — even after one of the truck's tires separated from the rim. The dashcam video shows sparks flying off the truck, the result of damage from a tire-deflating device deployed by officers during the chase.

In Wayne County, Indiana, a FedEx driver helped end the pursuit when they crossed into the left lane in front of the truck, which then came to a stop in the median, police said. Officers subsequently took the suspect into custody without further incident and transported him to an Ohio jail.

13News has learned the officer who the man is alleged to have struck in Dayton is expected to be OK.
