IMPD: Man arrested on preliminary murder charge in deadly shooting outside far east side store

Officers were called to the parking lot of a Family Dollar store in the 10000 block of East 30th Street just before 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 17.

INDIANAPOLIS — IMPD arrested a man Friday, Oct. 19 on a preliminary murder charge for his alleged role in a deadly shooting in a store parking lot on the far east side of Indianapolis last week.

Officers were called to the parking lot of a Family Dollar store in the 10000 block of East 30th Street, which is just east of North Mitthoefer Road, just before 4 p.m. Oct. 17 on a report of a person shot. Officers found a man who had apparently been shot. Medics pronounced him dead at the scene.

On Oct. 18, the Marion County Coroner's Office identified the man as 32-year-old William Edward Hodges Jr.

A short time after, Lawrence officers responded to the 5600 block of North Post Road on another reported shooting. Officers at that scene also found a man with apparent gunshot wounds. He was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.

According to IMPD, two men were involved in some kind of disturbance outside the store. That disturbance ended in gunfire between the two. After Lawrence police found a man in car shot on Post Road, police said they believed he was the other man from the shooting outside Family Dollar.

On Friday, Oct. 19, the man found on Post Road was arrested on a preliminary murder charge.

NOTE: 13News does not name suspects in cases until formal charges are filed by prosecutors.

No customers or employees inside the store were injured. Investigators said they're not looking for anyone else in this shooting.

A woman who didn't want to go on camera told 13News she was a relative of the man who died. She said her cousin had just picked up his kids at school and dropped them off at home before going to the Family Dollar just down the street. A short time later, he was gone.
