Body camera video shows shooting involving Lawrence County officers

Police say Anthony Richmond, of West Baden, shot two officers during a traffic stop on Feb. 5, 2023.

MITCHELL, Ind. — Police have released new body camera video showing a southern Indiana police officer being shot while trying to arrest a suspect in February.

Lawrence County Sheriff's Deputy Whitney stopped 28-year-old Anthony Richmond, of West Baden, for a traffic violation around 3:15 a.m. on Feb. 5, 2023, on State Road 37 in Mitchell, Indiana.

During the stop, officers detected criminal activity, and a K-9 alert found marijuana and methamphetamine during a search of the vehicle.

As officers tried to put Richmond in handcuffs, police said he ran across SR 37. When officers caught up to him, he physically began to resist arrest, drew a handgun and began firing at the officers at close range.

Mitchell Police Ofc. Christian Anderson and Lawrence County Sheriff's Deputy Joshua Rhodes were wounded in the shooting. At least one of the officers was able to return fire, wounding Richmond, who died in an ambulance.
