INDIANAPOLIS — A judge has sentenced a 67-year-old man for kidnapping and raping a woman at gunpoint in Indianapolis.
Roy Robinson was sentenced Wednesday to 44 years in prison following his March trial in which he was found guilty of the following ten charges:
- Three counts of rape
- Two counts of kidnapping
- Two counts of criminal confinement
- Two counts of resisting law enforcement
- One count of operating as a habitual traffic violator
On March 13, 2023, IMPD officers responded to a report of rape near East 16th Street and Dequincy Streets.
The victim told police that a man got out of a car near a bus stop. He showed her a handgun and told her to get into the car.
That man, identified as Robinson, drove her to Brookside Park where he sexually assaulted her. The woman escaped Robinson and ran to a nearby liquor store where she asked for help and spoke with police.
Police saw Robinson leaving the scene, and asked him to step out of the car. Robinson refused and tried to drive away. Police chased him, and he crashed into a railroad crossing sign and a van near 16th Street and Sherman Drive. The driver and passenger of the van were not seriously injured in the crash.
Detectives got for a search warrant for Robinson's car, where they found a handgun under the passenger seat — but the handgun turned out to be a fake plastic gun. Detectives also found a loaded 9mm magazine, star-shaped security officer badge and a backpack containing sex toys.
