Residents frustrated after Haughville Park shooting that injured 3 men

Investigators are still trying to figure out who fired the shots and are working to determine a motive.

INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis police are investigating after three men were shot during a "large disturbance" at a park on the city's near west side Tuesday evening.

"I was saddened, sickness, kind of horrified," Olgen Williams said.

Those are the emotions Williams felt after hearing about a triple shooting around 8:15 p.m. June 11 at Haughville Park, just blocks from his home.

"These are young people's lives," Williams said. "There could have been three deaths, and that's horrible to think about that. It's horrible to think about."

Officers found "a large disturbance following a gathering at the park," Lt. Kevin Duley told 13News. Shortly after, police began receiving reports of multiple people shot.

Officers responded to Haughville Park, near West Michigan and North Tremont streets, for reports of shots fired around 8:15 p.m. June 11, 2024.

A man with an apparent gunshot wound was found near West 10th Street and North Belmont Avenue, not far from the park. Minutes later, another man who had been shot was found near West Michigan Street and North Pershing Avenue.

And around the same time, a man who police said was also shot in the incident showed up at Eskenazi Hospital.

"We just trying to get them to understand that this is a at-risk life you're living," Williams said.

For Williams, the shooting comes with frustration, having just been at the park four days ago, trying to get a group of young people to make better life decisions.

"And we spoke about the violence and homicides and how they were putting themselves at risk by doing and living the lifestyle they were living," Williams said.

Among talking, Williams believes getting the park in better shape will help spark a positive attitude on this part of town.

"We try to bring in programs to make a difference, but you always got a group of people that want to do something different, and we got to help them," Williams said. "If they don't want to help, we got to get them out of the neighborhood."

Police described all three victims' conditions as "stable." Investigators are trying to figure out who fired the shots and are working to determine a motive.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-8477.
