Purdue's Ross-Ade Stadium underwent renovations during the off-season in preparation of their season opener against Fresno State on Sept. 2, 2023.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue University police issued a warning to students Wednesday of a scam involving football tickets.

The school said in a statement that its police department is investigating "several reports" of fraud related to Purdue football tickets.

The scam started on the group messaging app GroupMe, where a person poses as a student and asks the potential ticket buyer for a photo of themselves and a photo of their student ID card.

"The fraudulent seller then uses photos of the previous victim to send to the next potential victim, claiming to be the Purdue student in photos as the one selling tickets," the school said.

The payments then take place on platforms such as Apple Pay and Venmo, police said.

“We advise the campus community to avoid engaging in online transactions like these with individuals they do not know,” Purdue University Police Department Chief Lesley Wiete said in a statement. “If a member of the campus community is approached in a group chat regarding tickets, they should not attempt to purchase the tickets. Also, they should save the information, such as usernames and phone numbers, and report the suspicious activity to our department.”

Anyone who witnesses suspicious activity regarding Purdue football tickets is asked to contact PUPD at 765-494-8221.
