Prosecutor not filing charges in Camby Walmart deadly shooting

The shooting happened in the parking lot around 1:45 p.m. June 2.

HENDRICKS COUNTY, Ind — The Hendricks County prosecutor is not filing charges in a deadly shooting in a parking lot of a Walmart in Camby.

According to the Hendricks County Sheriff's Office, deputies were called to the store, located at 8191 Upland Way, near West Mooresville Road and State Road 67, around 1:45 p.m. June 2 for a report of a person shot.

Officers arrived roughly 10 minutes later and found one man near a vehicle suffering from what police believe was a gunshot wound to the torso. Medics tended to the man and transported him in critical condition to Methodist Hospital, where he later died.

The Hendricks County Sheriff's Office identified the man who died as 34-year-old Matthew Steele, of Indianapolis.

Witnesses told police that there was some type of verbal and physical altercation in the parking lot between two men prior to shots being fired.

Deputies detained and questioned a 19-year-old man who was involved in the incident.

After a thorough investigation, the Hendricks County Sheriff's Office said there was evidence the 19-year-old acted in self-defense, and the Hendricks County prosecutor declined to file criminal charges against him.
