INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — Neighbors are hoping police can find the thief who stole mail out of their mailbox.
"It's a federal offense. That's what the cops told us," said Patrick Sill, talking about the federal offense captured by a camera, right on Sill's front porch Saturday afternoon.
Video shows a person starting to walk by Sill's house on East 16th Street.
"They looked up onto the porch. She saw that we had some mail sticking out of the slot there and they turned around came up on the porch, grabbed that mail out and then bent the corner up on the box, reached in, took a minute or two to grab everything out of there and took off the way they were headed," Sill said, describing the video.
What stood out for Sill, as much as what happened, was the unmistakable color of the person's hair.
"They got black, blue and white hair, so it stood out pretty well, especially in the light," Sill said.
"The blue bag and the blue hair really stood out," he added. "That really stood out. You figure if they walk by right now, it would be pretty obvious."
After reporting what happened to police, Sill put out a call on the Nextdoor app, wondering if any of his neighbors were missing mail, too.
"Add to the case, get some better footage, maybe an idea where they came, which direction they came from, if you have a car, anything like that," Sill explained.
So far, he hasn't heard anything and wonders what the motive was for taking his mail.
"Just kind of shocked at how brazen it was. I guess. I don't understand what they're going for. If they're looking for credit cards or identity theft or who knows what," Sill said, realizing he may never figure it out.
He also reported what happened to the United States Postal Service and has turned over video to police.
