The situation unfolded Friday morning on State Road 32, just east of Interstate 69 in Daleville.

DALEVILLE, Indiana — The Delaware County sheriff told 13News that a suspect who allegedly fired a shot while being chased by officers in Daleville Thursday evening shot himself during a standoff.

The situation unfolded Friday morning on State Road 32, just east of Interstate 69 in Daleville.

According to the sheriff, Trenton Wade Patterson Sr., 48, is in custody at the hospital.

The sheriff also tells 13News additional shots were fired during the standoff on Friday. According to an Indiana State Police release, Patterson pointed a gun at deputies when they found him. A deputy did fire at Patterson.

Patterson then barricaded himself in a car.

Police said they surrounded the car and evacuated people living nearby.

"When things like this happen, police come out of the wood work, and I wouldn't expect anything less," said Delaware County Sheriff Tony Skinner.

After an hour, SWAT fired a chemical agent into the car. Officers then claim they heard a gunshot from the car.

Patterson was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

The name of the deputy who fired their gun at Patterson is not being released at this time, ISP said. The deputy will be placed on administrative leave until the investigation is complete, which is department policy.
