Police arrest suspect in Indy Thanksgiving shooting

Authorities had been looking for Tyrell Montgomery since Thanksgiving in connection with a shooting.

INDIANAPOLIS — Police spent the weekend searching for 27-year-old Tyrell Montgomery who they believe shot and critically wounded a man Thursday morning on the near north side of Indianapolis.

On Friday, IMPD said Montgomery should be considered armed and dangerous.

The shooting happened Nov. 23 around 10 a.m. on Talbott Street, near Pennsylvania Street.

"Oftentimes, we may know somebody to be a suspect, but we don't believe them to be a danger," Lt. Shane Foley said. "In this case, we believe we've identified the person responsible for this incident and believe he may be a danger to the public."

IMPD announced Montgomery was arrested for battery resulting in serious bodily injury and battery with a deadly weapon Saturday.

Police suspect Montgomery of shooting the victim multiple times. The victim remains at the hospital in critical condition.

Court records show Montgomery has three active warrants in Marion County. Two of those warrants are for cases with felony battery charges and one is a case of misdemeanor battery. One of those cases was filed a week before Thursday's shooting.

Court records also show last Wednesday, Montgomery was released from the Marion County Jail on home detention in a case where he was suspected of committing battery against a public safety official.

Montgomery has ties to Delaware County, where he was convicted of burglary in 2017, according to official court documents. He took a plea deal in that case, where two Level 2 felony charges and a Level 3 felony charge were dropped.

That same year, Montgomery was convicted of domestic battery, taking a plea deal in that case as well, where a felony charge was dismissed.
