HANCOCK COUNTY, Ind. — The man accused of hitting a cyclist and taking off faces charges.
The Hancock County sheriff said surveillance video helped them locate Jonathan Jacobi, the alleged hit-and-run driver, Monday morning. Jacobi is scheduled in court for an initial hearing Tuesday morning.
Terry Huff was found in a ditch on SR 234 in the northern part of Hancock County Friday morning. Homeowners on that stretch of road say they see him out riding all the time.
If not for the eye of the camera, the driver suspected of hitting him may have gotten away with it. Investigators say Jacob admitted to the violent hit-and-run.
The 37-year-old from Markleville is in the Hancock County Jail with bond awaiting his initial hearing for leaving the scene of a crash that caused serious bodily injury.
Huff, 67, was headed westbound with traffic, which is the law. He also wore a reflective vest to help make it easier for drivers to see him on the road.
After the hit-and-run, a driver called 911 after seeing Huff in the grassy ditch waving his arm for help. Crash scene investigators used green paint to mark the point of impact, with painted circles showing where they found debris.
A concerned neighbor who saw Huff riding on 234 regularly snapped a photo of his bike in the field near his home. But the break in the case came from another neighbor on 234, who scanned his home security video.
The snapshot from the video reportedly shows Jacobi's Ford F-250 on 234 at the time of the crash. Investigators also recovered truck parts at the scene.
Huff was in critical condition, but later died of his injuries.
