Police investigating after body found on near west side sidewalk

IMPD homicide detectives are investigating an incident that occurred at Michigan and Centennial streets on the near west side.

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - IMPD homicide detectives are investigating an incident that occurred at Michigan and Centennial streets on the near west side Wednesday.

Police responded to the 500 block of Centennial Street just after 7 a.m. after someone reported finding a dead body on the sidewalk.

Detectives spent several hours at the crime scene piecing together what happened.

The victim's grandmother talked with Eyewitness News about the impact it has had on her family. What's worse this is not the first time she's lost a family member to violence.

"Tre was a handsome young man," said Edwina Hogan. She is one of the people who helps keep the family together like glue. She rushed to the crime scene from home.

While fighting back tears during an exclusive interview with Eyewitness News, Hogan shared the pain of losing another grandson to violence. A family member found 27-year-old DeJuan "Tre" Burruss on the sidewalk shot dead.

"He was just getting off from work. How this happened we don't know. But we would like to know," Hogan said.

Metro homicide detectives got help from the crime lab collecting evidence. Tre's grandmother explained, after getting a jump for his car that wouldn't start, he arrived home and that's when someone shot him. Detectives had Tre's car towed away to process for evidence.

"He couldn't even come home from work to take a shower like the person who probably killed him would have done. Now what? What do we do?" said Hogan.

The victim's family, especially his heartbroken grandmother, is praying for justice.

"I am really really heartsick myself and I hope whoever did it will get caught." Hogan said.

Authorities said that a gold Chevy Malibu might have been involved in the homicide. The car was found with blood on the back bumper and back passenger door.

There is no information about a suspect at this time. No one is in police custody.
