INDIANAPOLIS — Police say a shooting suspect was shot and killed by officers after a pursuit across the north side of Indianapolis Tuesday afternoon.
Just after 3 p.m. June 25, officers were responding to a report of a shooting in the 9000 block of Wesleyan Road, near North Michigan Road and West 86th Street.
When officers arrived, they found a woman who had apparently been shot. She was taken to the hospital, where police describe her condition as stable.
IMPD Chief Chris Bailey said a second person, apparently a good Samaritan, was taken to the hospital to be treated for bite wounds.
Witnesses described a maroon Dodge Ram as a possible suspect vehicle to officers at the scene. When they spotted the truck, officers gave chase.
The chase ended in the 8000 block of Maple Leaf Lane, near Castleton Square Mall and Interstate 69.
According to Bailey, the suspect – later identified as 45-year-old Elijah Hakiem Radford – stopped the truck in a grassy area and fled into an apartment. Once inside, police said Radford held a woman at knifepoint. He reportedly refused to drop the knife after repeated commands by officers.
An IMPD officer and an officer from the Lawrence Police Department fired at Radford, who was struck. He died at the scene.
The woman who was being held at knifepoint was checked out at the scene, but was not injured.
Bailey said investigators believe Radford knew the woman who was shot at the original scene and that the shooting started as some sort of domestic dispute. Investigators also believe Radford had been staying at the apartment where he was shot by officers.
An IMPD spokesperson said detectives found a rifle at the initial scene and a knife near Radford at the second scene.
No officers were injured in the incident.
On July 9, IMPD identified its officer who fired at the suspect as four-year veteran Officer Edward Lenane.
The officers who fired shots at Radford have been placed on administrative leave, per policy, pending internal investigations.
Officers with IMPD, Lawrence Police, the Marion County Sheriff's Office and Indiana State Police were involved in the incident.
Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to contact IMPD Det. Sergeant Erika Jones at the homicide office by calling 317-327-3475 or Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS.
This incident is being investigated by IMPD’s Critical Incident Response Team. Detectives are working with the Marion County Prosecutor's Office and the Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency to complete a fair and thorough investigation.
IMPD’s Internal Affairs Unit is conducting a separate internal investigation to ensure compliance with departmental policy, as is standard procedure in an officer-involved shooting.
The civilian-majority Use of Force Review Board will conduct a mandatory review of this incident as it does for any use of deadly force against a person.
