Police ask Indy communities to look out for pop-up parties at short-term rentals after 12-year-old shot

Police say these pop-up parties have become more common over the past year.

INDIANAPOLIS — IMPD is again asking parents and property owners to be on the lookout for parties at short-term rentals that they say have been dangerous at times.

This comes after an incident this past weekend where a 12-year-old was allegedly shot on his way to one of those parties.

Early Sunday morning, gunshots were fired outside a home on Indy's east side. IMPD arrested 18-year-old Usif Muhamad and 19-year-old Peyton Minor, and identified them as hosting a party that was allegedly serving alcohol to minors and spiraled out of control.

"We're guessing, watching the groups, maybe 300 people," said Charles Spivey, who lives down the street from the short-term rental.

Police say these pop-up parties have become more common over the past year and say renters should be mindful of locals renting a property for one night. They suggest parents should keep a close eye on their child's social media accounts.

"We're not trying to be the fun police, we're not trying to take away the fun, but what we're finding is some of these short-term rentals are renting for a single night, they're inviting every and anybody, and they're making it clear that illegal activity is welcomed at these events," IMPD Lt. Shane Foley said.

If you suspect you see one of these parties or find information on the planning of one of these parties, you're asked to contact IMPD's Nuisance Abatement team.
