2 suspects in custody after shooting that wounded 4 people at Columbus park

Four victims — only identified as two young adults and two juveniles — were transported to hospitals after being shot Tuesday around 7:40 p.m.

COLUMBUS, Ind. — Police are investigating a shooting that wounded multiple people in a Columbus park Tuesday evening.

The shooting happened May 23 in Lincoln Park around 7:40 p.m. In a Facebook post, police said the shooting happened near the Hamilton Center in the park, near 25th Street and Hawcreek Avenue.

Officers arrived to find "multiple people with gunshot wounds" near a basketball court, and four victims — only identified as  two young adults and two juveniles — were transported to the hospital for treatment of their injuries.

A spokesperson for Columbus Regional Health told 13News three of the four victims were subsequently transported Indianapolis-area hospitals. The fourth patient was still being seen at Columbus Regional and listed in stable condition. 

Wednesday morning, a police department spokesperson said two 18-year-olds are in custody.

Police pulled over 18-year-old Alexander Parker, of Columbus, Tuesday night and took him into custody. 

As the investigation continued, detectives learned a second suspect was reportedly involved in the shooting.

Around 12:45 a.m. on Wednesday, police took 18-year-old Edmarius Oats, of Columbus, into custody outside of a home in the 3400 block of Old Field Lane, near Rocky Ford and Taylor roads.

Police took both Oats and Parker to the Bartholomew County Jail on the following preliminary charges: 

  • Edmarius Oats - Aggravated battery and criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon
    Alexander Parker - Aggravated Battery, criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon and assisting a criminal

Police told 13News the park was crowded at the time of the shooting, and there was an event inside the ice rink at the Hamilton Center. The center was placed on lockdown when the shooting happened.

Police acknowledged civilian employees of the city who reacted to get people in the park to safety.
