Peru woman, 83, killed in crash with alleged drunk driver

Police believe a drunk and speeding driver is the one who caused a crash that killed an 83-year-old woman in Peru Sunday night.

PERU, Ind. (WTHR) - Police believe a drunk and speeding driver is the one who caused a crash that killed an 83-year-old woman in Peru Sunday night.

State police say 21-year-old Andrew Winch of Peru ignored a stop sign and slammed into another car with four people inside on Fifth Street at Benton Street. The crash happened around 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

Mary Hipskind, also from Peru, was killed in the crash and 72-year-old Barbara Knowlton was seriously injured. The other two people in the car and Winch were not hurt, police said.

Investigators believe Winch was driving a pick-up truck west on Fifth Street when he disregarded a stop sign and hit the Honda CRV driven by 76-year-old Norman Knowlton.

Winch now faces a long list of charges, including OWI and reckless homicide.
