INDIANAPOLIS — IMPD is investigating after a woman was struck and killed by a vehicle on Indy's northwest side Monday morning. Police believe the driver fled the scene.
Around 6:30 a.m. Sept. 30, officers responded to a report of a person down in the 4000 block of North High School Road, near 38th Street.
When they arrived on scene, police found a woman who had been struck by a vehicle but could not find the suspect vehicle that was responsible. Medics pronounced the woman dead at the scene.
"It's happened all too often this year," IMPD Ofc. Tommy Thompson said. “If you are involved in this or if it’s an accident, just stay on scene, please.”
The road was shut down from Gateway Drive to Commons Drive for several hours during the investigation.
IMPD says there is no suspect information at this time.
So far this year, 33 people have died in Indianapolis after being struck by cars, according to data from Indy Pedestrian Safety Crisis. In more than half of the cases, the drivers never stopped.
Indy Pedestrian Safety Crisis also considers this section of High School Road to be a dangerous hot spot for pedestrians.
In just the last three years, IMPD responded to three fatal hit-and-runs in the area. All of them happened while it was dark outside.
After the last investigation, the city’s Fatal Crash Review Board issued recommendations to make the road safer. Those recommendations included a crosswalk to connect existing sidewalks to the nearby bus stops.
However, those changes have not yet been implemented.
Police continue to look for the driver responsible for this latest deadly hit-and-run. Anyone with information is asked to contact IMPD or Crime Stoppers at 317-262-8477.
