INDIANAPOLIS — IMPD is investigating after a 13-year-old boy was killed in a shooting on the east side of Indianapolis Wednesday evening.
Shortly after 8:30 p.m. on Nov. 15, IMPD officers responded to an apartment complex in the 3500 block of Blue Spruce Lane, near East 38th Street and North Sherman Drive, on a report of a person shot.
When officers arrived, they located a boy with injuries consistent with a gunshot wound. The victim was taken to a hospital in critical condition, but he later died from his injuries.
The Marion County Coroner's Office identified the victim as 13-year-old Dayon Darnell Lyles.
According to IMPD Ofc. William Young, the preliminary investigation shows the shooting started as some type of disturbance between two groups of people. At some point, shots were fired. The boy who was shot was not involved in the disturbance, police said.
Detectives do not have a suspect in the shooting at this time, but Young issued a plea for that person to surrender.
"You take it upon yourself to pick up a firearm and someone lost their life. I'm urgently asking you to turn yourself in," Young said. "There's a mother out here who just lost a child. That has to wake our community up. Our community ... we shouldn't be used to these things happening."
Anyone with information about the shooting should contact Det. Matthew Melkey at the IMPD Homicide Office at 317-327-3475 or Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-TIPS.
