BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Bloomington officials are investigating after a man was found dead near a Bloomington homeless shelter Thursday.
Officers responded to the 200 block of South Westplex Avenue, near West 3rd Street, around 5:40 p.m. Dec. 7 and found a man dead in the woods near the Wheeler Mission shelter, according to the Bloomington Police Department.
The man was found with several injuries, and police interviewed multiple people at the scene.
The Monroe County Coroner's Office identified the victim as 31-year-old Shaquille Phillips. The coroner said Phillips had been experiencing homelessness and had been in the Bloomington area for less than a year. He was from the Gary, Indiana/Chicago area.
On Dec. 10, witnesses identified a 42-year-old suspect, who was located and detained.
Following an interview, police arrested the suspect on a preliminary charge of murder. He is currently being held at the Monroe County Jail.
