BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — The Bloomington Police Department is investigating an early morning shooting near Indiana University's campus.
According to a release by BPD, around 2 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 3, officers responded to a call about weapons in the 500 block of Park Avenue, which is a couple blocks south of the IU Bloomington campus.
Bystanders at the scene reportedly told officers someone had been shot. Officers located a 23-year-old Bloomington man with a gunshot wound to the chest. Life-saving procedures were performed, but the victim eventually died from his injuries.
The Monroe County coroner identified the deceased as Tyriq Bridgwaters.
Officers also located a second shooting victim. A 19-year-old man was found with a gunshot wound and transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police said detectives spoke with witnesses who told them three men were denied entry into the party because one of them had a visible handgun tucked away in the waistband of their pants.
According to the media release, witnesses told officers that a man wearing a pink shirt began firing the handgun into the crowd at the party.
"It's an indescribable feeling. No one deserves to lose their life over something like that," said Aidan Neel, who lives near the scene.
Neel said he and his roommates were walking home when they saw the cop cars on their street, but it wasn't until they saw the bullet holes on their cars and front door to realize what happened.
"Coming home not knowing what really happened and knowing that if one or several of us happened to be outside and could have been in danger, it's a horrible feeling," Neel said.
Shortly after the shooting, an Indiana State Police trooper stopped a car, and a passenger matched the description of the suspect in the shooting. Police also found a handgun in the car.
Police detained all three people in the car and questioned them at the police station.
Following the interviews, police transported a 21-year-old Linton man to the Monroe County Jail on preliminary charges of murder and criminal recklessness.
