Man charged in voyeurism incidents in women's locker rooms at YMCAs in Marion, Hamilton counties

John Deramus was reportedly seen looking into the showers of the women's locker room.

FISHERS, Ind. — A man police charged with voyeurism at a Fishers YMCA is also facing a charge for voyeurism at a Marion County YMCA.

John Deramus II is facing a series of charges.

On Feb. 14, police were called to the Irsay Family YMCA. According to court documents, a woman reported she caught Deramus recording her with a phone while she was showering. She and another woman confronted Deramus, and a staff member escorted him to an office and called police.

Officers confiscated the phone and were told by a staff member that Deramus had 38 other incidents at the YMCA and was suspended three times for entering the women's locker room — one of those suspensions was for 30 days.

The victim told police when she saw the phone, she shouted, asking if he was recording her. She says he responded, "No, no, no. I'm not," and removed the phone.

Deramus allegedly told officers he had been in the sauna, had a towel on his head, and entered the wrong locker room by mistake. Police said surveillance video contradicts what he said.

On Feb. 26, Fishers police officers arrested Deramus at the YMCA on 126th Street.

According to court documents in that incident, a woman was in the shower when someone entered the stall right next to hers. She said all the other stalls were empty. When she finished, she claimed Deramus ran out of the locker room. By the time police arrived, Deramus was gone.

Police used license plate cameras to identify the suspect's car and identify Deramus as the owner. Detectives then learned Deramus had been trespassed from all YMCA's in the greater Indianapolis area for behavioral issues — including entering women's locker rooms.

On Feb. 27, officers were again called to the Fishers YMCA for Deramus being caught in the women's locker room.

Court documents claim Deramus said he used his cousin's name to get into the YMCA. He claimed to have entered the women's locker room by mistake both times.

Detectives asked Deramus if he recorded anything in the locker room either day, and he allegedly told them, "I recorded today." Police said he admitted recording videos of a woman showering and there were three to four videos.

Police found his phone inside one of his shoes.

On the phone, police found videos of a woman showering at the YMCA.

"In the moment I saw him, I was terrified because I assumed he was about to attack me. I hope he gets help and stops violating people in this way. I fear that he will continue to do this behavior and that his actions will escalate," an anonymous victim told 13News.

The YMCA of Greater Indianapolis issued this statement to 13News:

"We are deeply disturbed by the voyeurism charges against John Deramus II. That any Y member would be subjected to such a gross invasion of privacy in our facilities is entirely unacceptable. We are working with local authorities to support them in any way we can during its investigation and prosecution.

At the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis, the security and privacy of everyone who enters our doors is a top priority. We have a series of measures in place to keep our Y community safe, including running daily screenings of all members and guests against the National Sex Offender Registry and terminating all memberships that return positive.

We are conducting a thorough review of our member screening and facility security policies and practices and will do everything in our ability to ensure nothing like this happens in the future."

A warrant is out for Deramus in Marion County. His trial in Hamilton County is set for July.
