INDIANAPOLIS — IMPD arrested a 31-year-old man for his alleged role in a suspected road rage shooting in Fountain Square over the weekend.
The shooting was reported around 1:15 p.m. Sunday, May 19 near the intersection of Virginia Avenue and Shelby Street.
Responding officers located two cars that had been in a crash, police said, and inside one of the cars was a man with a gunshot wound. He was taken to a local hospital in critical condition but is expected to survive, IMPD said in a statement.
The suspected shooter remained at the scene and was detained by officers, who later located a handgun and shotgun in his vehicle, police said.
A witness said they saw one of the cars driving in an "aggressive manner" when it pulled up to the traffic light next to the victim's car. The witness said it looked like both drivers were arguing and then the window of the victim's car was shattered. Right after, the suspect's car tried to drive off but crashed into another vehicle.
Another witness told police that they heard the crash and went to help the victim. That's when the suspect walked up to them and said that they were the ones who shot the victim.
"IMPD Aggravated Assault Detectives preliminarily believe this shooting was the result of a road rage incident," the department said in a social media post.
The suspect was arrested on a preliminary charge of battery with a deadly weapon resulting in serious bodily injury.
"Everyone involved in the incident has been identified, and there is no ongoing threat to the public," IMPD said.
The Marion County Prosecutor's Office charged the man with battery by means of a deadly weapon, criminal recklessness and pointing a firearm at another.
