INDIANAPOLIS — IMPD officers were involved in a shooting Tuesday morning on the Indianapolis' east side.
An IMPD spokesperson said officers responded around 9 a.m. May 28 to the 2800 block of North Post Road, near East 30th Street, for a report of an armed carjacking at a gas station. The victim told police that one suspect approached her at gunpoint, demanding her car and other items. The victim also told police other people were in the suspect's car while the carjacking happened.
13News spoke with the victim, who wanted to remain anonymous. She said she stopped at the gas station on her way to work when someone at another pump pointed a gun at her and told her, "Give me everything before I shoot you."
She said the man with the gun made her change the password on her iPhone before taking her cellphone and car.
Officers put out a description of the suspect's car and victim's car, and an officer saw both vehicles in an apartment complex approximately a mile and a half north in the 9100 block of Cavalier Court, near East 38th Street and North Post Road.
Police said the officer saw a suspect and told him to "get on the ground" and "drop the gun." According to IMPD, the suspect did not follow the officer's commands and started to run from the suspect's car.
According to police, an officer shot at the suspect when he dropped an item and went to grab it. Police said the suspect then continued to run from the officer, while the officer told the suspect to "drop it." The officer then shot at the suspect two more times, with the suspect being struck at least once.
Police said the suspect fell to the ground, and responding officers provided aid to him.
According to IMPD, the suspect was taken in critical condition to a local hospital, where he later died.
On May 29, the Marion County Coroner's Office identified the man as 20-year-old Jerrett Dwain Gray Jr.
No officers were injured during the incident.
Near the suspect, detectives located two guns with extended magazines – one of which was equipped with a Glock switch.
On June 4, IMPD identified the officer who fired his gun as seven-year veteran Officer Austin Kirby, who has been placed on administrative leave, per standard procedure in an officer-involved shooting investigation. IMPD said the officer's body-worn camera was also activated during the incident.
Police said at least one other suspect fled the area in a dark gray vehicle.
Late Tuesday, IMPD said officers had located the suspect vehicle and detained several people. An adult male was arrested for his alleged role in the carjacking and two others were arrested for unrelated charges.
Wednesday morning, the department shared more information on the arrests. IMPD said detectives located the suspect car in the 300 block of North Shortridge Road, near Shadeland Avenue and East Washington Street, using techniques including automated license plate reader technology.
"Detectives observed several individuals believed to be involved in the carjacking get into two separate vehicles and begin to drive away," IMPD said in statement. At a traffic stop in the 7500 block of East 10th Street, near Interstate 465, police took a 20-year-old man into custody "without incident."
The man was arrested on a preliminary charge of armed robbery.
In a second traffic stop in the 1700 block of North Shadeland Avenue, near East 21st Street, three people were taken into custody.
"A strong odor of marijuana was coming from the vehicle, and, in plain view, detectives could see a rifle on the floorboard," the department said. "A further search of the vehicle produced approximately 15 grams of marijuana and a handgun magazine."
The driver, a 20-year-old man, was operating a vehicle on a suspended license with a prior conviction, police said. Detectives found he also had a Glock switch, police said.
The man was arrested on a preliminary charge of possession of a machine gun. A 17-year-old passenger was arrested for a preliminary charge of possession of marijuana. A third male passenger was released pending additional investigation, IMPD said.
The IMPD Critical Incident Response Team responded to the scene to conduct the criminal investigation.
IMPD Internal Affairs is conducting a separate administrative investigation.
The civilian-majority Use of Force Review Board will conduct a mandatory hearing for any attempted use of deadly force against a person. This will happen at the end of the criminal process.
