INDIANAPOLIS — Beech Grove police are sharing new information about an arrest made after two young girls were injured inside of their Park View apartment.
The shooting happened on Feb. 15, 2024, around 6:45 a.m.
According to court documents, several people were inside the apartment when the gunfire started in the back of the home.
A 7-year old girl was shot in the ankle, and a 15-year old girl on the second floor was grazed by a bullet.
Witnesses said they saw a white Dodge Charger with dark-tinted windows leave the scene.
Neighbors' doorbell cameras captured three males getting in the vehicle and driving off.
Police discovered images of the vehicle on the Flock camera system and would later get the license plate. Investigators would later discover the vehicle belonged to the parent of two males familiar to police: Jamar Johnson and another suspect, who 13News is not naming since prosecutors have not filed charges against him at this time.
Investigators would also discover they used to live at the Park View apartments.
At the scene of the shooting, crime scene investigators collected 76 total fired shell casings, 10 metal fragments, seven fired bullets and three fired bullet jackets.
A witness told investigators about a social media post made by Johnson, which revealed two people holding firearms. The witness also told police the social post was created shortly after the shooting had occurred.
Four hours after the shooting, Beech Grove police located the suspected vehicle and attempted a traffic stop, but the drivers sped off in excess of 100 mph. Police said the driver hit a curb and a rock in the parking lot of the Marathon gas station on Southeastern Avenue.
Police said the suspects then ran. Officers said one of the suspects, Scottreon Nelson, tossed a gun as he was running away.
Officers later arrested all three suspects and found one handgun inside the vehicle described as an AK-47-style firearm that fires a rifle cartridge.
Detectives said that gun was reported stolen. It would later match ballistics for shell casings recovered from the shooting scene.
While the suspects were in custody, a search warrant for a buccal swab was granted before the suspects were released.
Later in the investigation, detectives said they took DNA evidence of the guns and clothing found inside the vehicle the suspects were in. That evidence allegedly matched what appeared on neighbors' cameras.
Prosecutors charged Johnson with unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, intimidation, two counts of resisting law enforcement, operating a vehicle without a license and two counts of criminal recklessness.
Prosecutors said Nelson has no adult criminal history. He has been charged with resisting law enforcement, and there is a warrant out for Nelson on two counts of criminal recklessness.
Police arrested the third suspect for resisting in a vehicle, resisting law enforcement and dangerous possession of a handgun by a minor. According to court documents, investigators said they found an unfired 9 mm handgun round in the third suspect's pocket.
