Indy man charged in murder of man he didn't shoot

Prosecutors have refiled charges and added murder in a 2022 shootout that killed a man and left a woman in critical condition.

INDIANAPOLIS — Police believe 24-year-old Kevin Stigger was shot and killed in a case of mistaken identity in September of 2022. Now a man is charged with his murder, even though police say he isn't the one that shot him.

On Sept. 19, 2024 prosecutors refiled charges against Jamion Johnson for his alleged role in the shooting. They now include the alleged murder of Kevin Stigger. The filings are giving us new details about the shooting.

Police say surveillance video shows the shooting started when Johnson pulled his gun as two people walked into the barber shop. One of them dove for the ground, the other allegedly returned fire. The video shows Johnson running out the back of the shop.

According to police, Stigger then tries to run out the front door of the barber shop and the man who returned fire "appears to mistake Kevin Stigger for the original shooter... and fires multiple shots at Stigger as (he) is moving toward the front door of the shop."

One of the shots hit and killed Stigger. But while police say Johnson didn't fire the killing shot, he is the one charged in Stigger's death.

The entire shooting took 3 seconds.

A 68-year-old woman was getting a haircut when the shooting started. She dove to the ground, but was hit twice in the legs. She was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Stigger's brother had driven him to the barber shop and was waiting in his car outside. He ran in after the shooting to find his brother dead.

Rondale Patterson is charged with criminal recklessness in the same shooting. He was released from jail ahead of his trial with a GPS monitor in August, over the prosecution's objection. A warrant was issued for his arrest for allegedly violating that release less than two weeks later.
