MUNCIE, Ind — The city of Muncie is closing Tuhey Pool due to break-ins, theft and vandalism.
It's the only city pool in Muncie, and it's closing ahead of the Labor Day holiday as the city faces brutal late-August heat.
The city says the crimes have been going on for weeks, and they will not be able to operate the pool for the rest of 2024.
In a post with photos showcasing the damage, the city said, "We are disheartened that the actions of a few have affected so many."
The YMCA helps operate the pool, and says the damage exceeds $1,000. All of the computers are gone, preventing checking in guests. The food has also been stolen from the concession stand.
"There have been break-ins and acts of vandalism, and the damage is just too much to overcome for the holiday weekend," said Amber Greene, director of communications for the city of Muncie.
Other Muncie city splash pads will be open for the Labor Day holiday. The Prairie Creek Reservoir's beach will also be open and free.
