Man injured in shooting during attempted robbery near downtown Indy canal

The shooting was reported shortly before 4:30 a.m. Tuesday in the 600 block of Canal Walk, near Indiana Avenue and West Michigan Street.

INDIANAPOLIS — A man is recovering after he was shot early Tuesday morning near the canal in downtown Indianapolis.

IMPD said the man was talking and in good condition when they found him in the 600 block of Canal Walk, near Indiana Avenue and West Michigan Street, shortly before 4:30 a.m. May 28.

Detectives are still investigating what led up to the shooting, but early Tuesday morning, an IMPD shift supervisor said it could have been the result of an attempted robbery.

Police took a juvenile into custody for questioning, who they called a person of interest. That juvenile was later released, after consultation with the Marion County Prosecutor's Office.

Now, police want to talk to anyone else who may have seen or heard something Tuesday morning in the moments before and after the shooting.

"They'll be out there trying to canvass the area, since we're in daylight hours, to see if there's any video footage or camera footage," IMPD Officer William Young said.

Hour later, dozens of people were out enjoying the canal, most unaware of the early morning shooting.

"I didn't even hear about it, which I guess is surprising," said Sarah Mueller, who was walking on the canal during her lunch hour.

Mueller frequently walks the canal during the week and said what happened wouldn't stop her from continuing to do that.

"I've not had any issues in the middle of the day with safety," said Mueller, who explained she wouldn't do the same thing after dark.

"I don't think there would been enough lighting, and there's too many dark places that I would not feel safe," Mueller said.

Police said they did not find a gun on the juvenile who was questioned, but police said there were several people at the scene.

"We understand there were multiple individuals so not sure if there was some sort of disturbance that occurred prior to shots being fired," said Young, who explained that heading into the summer months, people could expect to see extra patrols on the canal, especially on the weekends.

Anyone with information on the incident can anonymously contact Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-8477.
