INDIANAPOLIS — A man is facing charges for allegedly causing a deadly crash on the east side of Indianapolis in February, which killed a mother and injured her child.
The crash happened around 8:30 a.m. Feb. 23 near the intersection of East 21st and North Irwin Streets, just west of Shadeland Avenue.
Michelle Umana-Rodriguez was killed in the crash, and her 11-year-old child was taken to a local hospital in "good condition," according to court documents. According to those documents, the two were in a car crossing an intersection when another car did not stop at a marked stop sign and entered the intersection around 80 mph two seconds before the crash, which is 50 mph faster than the posted speed limit of 30 mph.
Officials performed a blood draw on that driver, who is from Seymour, before he was taken to a local hospital for the injuries he sustained during the crash. According to a toxicology report from the crash, investigators found that the man had methamphetamine, benzoylecgonine and cocaine in his system.
Prosecutors issued a warrant May 29 for the driver's arrest on formal charges of causing death when operating a vehicle while intoxicated, causing death when operating a vehicle with a controlled substance and reckless homicide.
