MORGAN COUNTY, Indiana — A Morgan County sheriff's deputy is expected to make a full recovery after she was shot Tuesday morning.
According to Morgan County Sheriff Rich Myers, deputies responded to a report of a suicidal person around 7:30 a.m. Jan. 23 in the 7000 block of Beech Grove Road, near State Road 39 in Martinsville.
Myers said a teenager called 911 after seeing a post on social media about a 15-year-old boy potentially harming himself at that address.
According to Myers, deputies arrived at the home for a welfare check and knocked on the door, but nobody answered.
While deputies were walking around the house to check if they could see anyone in the home, Myers said someone from inside the home shot at deputies, with one shot hitting Deputy Mallory Schwab in her right shoulder.
"Deputy Mallory Schwab was walking around the outside of the residence when a shot rang out and struck her," Myers said. "It went clean through."
Neighbor Mike Criss said the boy's family just moved there last summer. He watched the police activity next door from his garage.
"I heard one cop going in, then I heard another one. There was a whole army full of 'em," Criss said. "You just can't imagine something like this happening."
For four hours, investigators tried to make contact with the teen, using a cellphone, throw phone, nonlethal gas, a drone, even a robot.
"I saw them hunkering down, walking around the house — no response. They were wanting him to turn the lights on and come to the door and respond, you know, and there was no response," Criss said.
State police told 13News the 15-year-old suspect was found dead in the home.
Medics transported Schwab to IU Health Methodist Hospital in downtown Indianapolis.
She was later released from the hospital Tuesday afternoon and is expected to make a full recovery.
"She's on her way home as we speak, so that's excellent news," Myers said during an afternoon news conference. "She's in great spirits. There's been law enforcement coming in and out all day."
Myers confirmed Schwab joined the Morgan County Sheriff's Office earlier this month. She had previously been with the Martinsville Police Department for more than four years, and she is also an Army reservist.
"She's a great officer, and we were pleased to get her. I'm so thankful to God that she's doing healthy," Myers said, who noted the community is very "close, tight-knit" and "breathing a sigh of relief" after Schwab's injuries weren't more serious.
"She was grateful for everyone being there their support and just overwhelmed by people coming in and out," Myers said. "This whole community has showed up en masse. It's not been, 'What can we do?' but 'When and where you need it?'"
Indiana State Police, now handling this investigation, said no deputies fired their weapons at any time Tuesday.
