INDIANAPOLIS — IMPD detectives are investigating a reported battery that happened Thursday on the Monon Trail on the north side of Indianapolis.
Police said the incident happened Sept. 26 on the Monon Trail near 75th Street and Westfield Boulevard.
IMPD told 13News the victim is expected to be OK and is not seriously hurt. However, investigators are asking for the public's help in identifying a potential suspect.
"It is concerning that this happened in the afternoon hours and at a time when you would expect a lot of people to be out on the trails," IMPD Capt. Shane Foley said.
Anyone with information is asked to call Det. Ryan Breeden at 317-327-3330.
13News also spoke with Keith Obye, who said he's on the Monon Trail as often as he can be.
"If I'm not traveling for work, I'm usually here at some point during the day," Obye said.
He enjoys coming out to get some exercise, but he wants to do it safely.
"Pay attention to my surroundings. Usually, I'm out in the daytime, in the daylight, so probably not a place to be at dusk or at night," Obye said.
IMPD said there will be increased patrols on local trails are part of the department's commitment to community safety.
As the weather cools and daylight shortens, IMPD is reminding the community about trail safety with the following tips:
- Whenever possible, hike or bike with someone else for added safety.
- Plan your route and inform someone. Share your plans with a friend or family member.
- Stay on marked trails. Avoid venturing off the beaten path.
- Carry essential gear. Bring a charged phone and necessary supplies.
- Be aware of your surroundings. Pay attention to trail signs, weather and others nearby.
- Follow local regulations. Local trails close at dusk.
