24-year-old man killed in west Indianapolis shooting; 'person of interest' released after questioning

INDIANAPOLIS — IMPD is investigating after a man was killed in a shooting on Indianapolis' west side early Thursday.

The shooting was reported around 5:15 a.m. Sept. 12 at an apartment complex in the 3800 block of West Michigan Street, near Holt Road.

Responding officers located a man who had been shot. He was pronounced dead at the scene, an IMPD spokesperson said.

On Friday, the Marion County Coroner's Office identified the deceased as 24-year-old Steven Dortch.

The spokesperson said a "person of interest" was detained by officers at the scene and taken to the department's homicide office for questioning.

In an update Sept. 12, police said that person was released pending further investigation.

At least one gun was found at the scene, the spokesperson said, adding that the shooting appeared to be an "isolated incident," and police do not believe there is any ongoing threat to the public.
