2 dead after 5 shootings Monday in Indianapolis

Police responded to reports of five shooting incidents between 3:30 a.m. and 1:35 p.m. Monday.

INDIANAPOLIS — IMPD is investigating five shootings Monday that left at least two people dead. The shootings are among nearly 20 that have happened since this weekend.

West side shooting

The latest shooting happened shortly after 1:30 p.m.

IMPD officers responded to a report of a person shot at an apartment complex in the 800 block of Cloverleaf Terrace, near Interstate 465 and West Washington Street.

At that location, officers found a man and a woman who had been shot.

The man died at the scene. The woman was taken to a local hospital in critical condition and died later in the day, IMPD said Tuesday morning.

"We have not taken anybody into custody, we haven't detained anyone so the assumption is there might be a suspect we may be looking for, however it is early in the investigation, and we haven't made it that far," IMPD Ofc. William Young told 13News at the scene Monday afternoon.

This was the fifth shooting of the day across Indianapolis.

It follows up a weekend where IMPD responded to more than a dozen non-fatal shootings.

"Ultimately, our detectives are looking to identify those people who are committing violent crime. That's our top priority," Lt. Shane Foley said. "Identifying those people who are committing violent crime, perpetuating the ability for others to commit violent crime. The more cooperation we have from our criminal justice system and from our community, the increased likelihood that we'd be able to have an impact on violent crime, which we've seen."

In this case, police are still trying to figure out the circumstances of the shooting and the victims' relationship.

"Preliminary information suggests it took place inside," Young said. "Some parts of it will be processed outside as well. We're waiting on search warrants."

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact Detective Christopher Edwards at the IMPD Homicide Office at 317-327-3475 or email him at Christopher.Edwards@indy.gov.

Northwest side shooting

Just before noon, officers were called to investigate a shooting near the intersection of 34th Street and High School Road on the northwest side. That person had apparent gunshot wounds but was conscious and alert when taken to the hospital.

Investigators believe this shooting may have occurred in the nearby Moller Creek neighborhood on Sunwood Drive. Police have arrested a person in that shooting.

Far east side shooting

Around 11 a.m., officers were called to a house on Fall Drive, near 21st Street and German Church Road, on the far east side. A victim was located and taken to the hospital in stable condition.

East side shooting

The second person was shot on Indianapolis' east side early Monday.

An IMPD spokesperson said dispatchers received calls reporting a shooting in the 5300 block of East 21st Street, near Emerson Avenue, around 3:30 a.m.

Officers found a man with an apparent gunshot wound at the Greenway Apartments.

Police said he was in stable condition when taken to a local hospital. The spokesperson didn't say whether a suspect had been identified.
