COLUMBUS, Ind. — A 20-year-old McCordsville man is facing preliminary charges after police say he abandoned a stolen vehicle to steal a tractor in Bartholomew County.

According to a release from the Bartholomew County Sheriff's Office, shortly before 7 p.m. on Friday, May 31, dispatchers received a 911 call about a man who had reportedly stolen a tractor near the intersection of West Lowell Road and North 250 West. The report indicated the man drove it several hundred yards before being caught by the tractor's owner.

The suspect reportedly fled on foot into a nearby field after being caught by the tractor's owner. Deputies said they eventually caught up to the man and found him urinating in a roadway.

After arresting the suspect, deputies said they found he had a key to a Lexus, as well as multiple vehicle registration cards for a Lexus in his pocket.

After checking the Lexus' BMV registration, police discovered the Lexus was reported stolen out of McCordsville. The Lexus was eventually located abandoned at a nearby interstate rest stop.

Deputies said the suspect is facing preliminary charges of theft of a motor vehicle, public indecency and resisting law enforcement.
