Man arrested after 'shootout' that injured 3 in Marion

Marion police say the suspect fired shots into an apartment Saturday night, then returned hours later and began shooting again before people inside returned fire.

MARION, Ind. — A suspect was arrested after a "shootout" that injured three people in Marion over the weekend, police said.

Around 9:15 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, Marion Police Department officers responded to a report of shots fired into a home in the 1700 block of August Walk, which is also listed as West Fall Drive, near West Kem Road and North Lincolnshire Boulevard.

Officers found that a sliding door of an apartment had been struck by bullets. No one was shot, but there were "several adults and children including two infants" in the apartment at the time of the incident, Marion PD said in a statement. Three cars in the parking lot were also struck by gunfire.

Police identified a suspect car, which was stopped by an officer near West Marion and North Park avenues.

"Officers were able to determine that two suspects named in the shooting lived near the traffic stop," the department said. Investigators served a search warrant at a nearby home but did not locate anyone.

Just hours after the initial incident, around 3 a.m., officers returned to the scene on August Walk for reports of shots fired in the area. Marion PD officers and Grant County Sheriff's Department deputies found three adults who had been shot near the back of the apartment.

A 22-year-old from Marion was shot in the thigh. A 23-year-old Marion man had a gunshot wound to his arm and graze to his chest area. He was transferred to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne due to his injuries.

The injuries to both men, who are believed to be connected to the apartment being shot at, were not life-threatening, police said.

A 24-year-old Marion man was shot in the lower leg. "He was later identified as the person who was armed and shooting into the residence," police said, adding that he allegedly discarded a gun which was found by officers.

The man was taken to Marion Radiant Health before being released and taken to the Grant County Jail.

"It is believed that [the man] returned to August Walk and began to shoot into an upstairs window," the department said. "The occupants then returned fire striking [the man]."

Police said the man faces several preliminary charges, including aggravated battery, criminal recklessness, battery with a deadly weapon and pointing a loaded firearm.

According to online court records, formal charges have not yet been filed.

The case remains under investigation. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact Marion PD Det. Capt. Josh Zigler at 765-668-4417, message the Marion Police (Indiana) Facebook page or call Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 765-662-8477.
