Marion County jail inmate dies after swallowing unknown substance

Police said Magic Dumes was being escorted for a search when he pulled out the unknown substance from his pants. He was pronounced dead roughly an hour later.

INDIANAPOLIS — The Marion County Sheriff's Office says an inmate at the Marion County jail died Thursday after ingesting an unknown substance.

According to a release from the MCSO, shortly after 9:30 a.m. on March 14, deputies initiated a search for contraband after receiving reports of controlled substances being present.

Magic Dumes, 33, was being escorted for the search when police say he pulled out an unknown substance from his pants and swallowed it. Dumes allegedly refused to cooperate with police and later became unresponsive.

Medics attempted life-saving measures before transporting him to Community East Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 10:29 a.m.

Police said the entire incident was caught on security cameras and that police believe his death was "a result of his own actions."

Dumes had reportedly been held at the Marion County jail 11 times since 2009. At the time of his death, Dumes was being held on a total of five felonies across two different cases, as well as felony robbery in Monroe County.
