INDIANAPOLIS — An Indianapolis man who has a habit of ramming into IMPD squad cars was sentenced Friday.
George Leachman, 43, was sentenced to ten years in prison after pleading guilty to three counts of battery with bodily injury to a public official. Leachman was also charged with two counts of resisting law enforcement, but under his plea agreement, those charges were dismissed.
Leachman was shot by police in February 2023 after he rammed a stolen pickup truck into an IMPD squad car, leading to a chase. The chase ended with Leachman being shot by an officer and taken to a nearby hospital.
The Marion County Superior Court told 13News in November that a $45,000 bond was set, but a "clerical error" led to it being a $4,500 bond, which Leachman paid on Nov. 4.
On Nov. 6, Leachman was spotted by police driving a truck with expired plates. After originally stopping for an officer, police said Leachman rammed the officer's car multiple times and took off.
The officer was able to go after Leachman, despite the damage to his car, and said Leachman backed the truck up and hit the officer's car again. The truck then came to a stop near Cottage Avenue and Asbury Street, and police arrested Leachman.
The officer, whose care was hit, was not injured.
Leachman was arrested for battery of a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest.
In 2018, IMPD spotted a stolen Ford truck, and tried to stop the driver. That's when police said Leachman put the truck in reverse and backed into an officer's car.
Leachman ultimately pleaded guilty to resisting police and was sent to prison.
A year earlier, Leachman pleaded guilty to ramming several police cars during a chase, injuring two officers. He was supposed to be on GPS monitoring, but police said he removed his ankle monitoring and went on the run at that time.
