CUMBERLAND, Indiana — An Indianapolis man wanted out of Marion and Hendricks counties was arrested Wednesday after police say he barricaded himself in a garage.
According to a social media post from the Cumberland Metropolitan Police Department, around 2:30 a.m. on March 27 officers responded to a residence in the 2500 block of Apple Tree Lane on a report of a disturbance between a man and a woman. The woman alleged that the man had assaulted her and was possibly armed.
When police arrived, they began talking with the woman who said the man was possibly still inside the residence.
As officers began looking for the man, the woman allegedly became uncooperative with police. Police say the woman began giving officers false information regarding their identities.
After not locating the man, police left the residence, but were able to confirm his identity. Police say the man had felony warrants for his arrest out of Marion and Hendricks counties.
Roughly ten minutes later, police say the same woman called again saying the man was inside her house. Officers were still in the area and were able to respond quickly.
Officers found the man inside the home's garage. Police say the man was attempting to escape through a window when he was located. After police gave the man verbal commands to surrender, he instead barricaded himself in the garage.
Cumberland police were then assisted by the Hancock County SWAT team. Police say the man was possibly armed as well.
After about an hour of negotiations, the SWAT team eventually forced their way into the garage and apprehended the man, who was found inside a washing machine.
After he was placed in handcuffs, the man reportedly assaulted an officer and attempted to run. He was apprehended once more and then proceeded to kick and scream at officers.
The man, identified as a 33-year-old from Indianapolis, was taken into custody and is awaiting formal charges. Police reportedly recovered a firearm from the scene.
(NOTE: 13News has a policy not to name suspects until formal charges are filed by a prosecutor.)
The release states that the woman reportedly later denied an assault had taken place and allegedly attempted to interfere with the investigation on multiple occasions, including physically entering the crime scene.
