Man sentenced to 25 years for March overdose death of 15-year-old Avon student

Trevor Strickland will serve a quarter century in prison for the March overdose death of Avon High School student Ray Jones.

AVON, Ind. — A Hendricks County man will serve the next 20 years in prison for the March overdose death of a 15-year-old Avon High School student

Trevor Strickland, 24, of Plainfield, was arrested March 22 at a hotel on Indianapolis' west side on charges of murder in connection with drug dealing.

At the time of his arrest, police said Strickland had nearly 1,000 tablets of "M 30" pills suspected to contain fentanyl, more than 26 ounces of additional narcotics, more than $18,000 in cash and a loaded handgun.

Court documents allege he used Snapchat to set up drug deals.

Teens told detectives "Trev," as they knew him on Snapchat, distributed to "multiple high school kids" who attend Avon High School.

Strickland was identified as the person who sold fentanyl-laced drugs to Avon High School freshman Ray Jones. Jones died March 15 of a drug overdose.

“The scourge of fentanyl has not gone away. Nine months ago our community was rocked by the loss of two young men to this epidemic. As this case demonstrates, our office takes these crimes very seriously. While this crime may be relatively new, it is the law and you will be prosecuted. So if you deal drugs in Hendricks County and take the life of someone, be prepared to serve a minimum of 20 years in prison,” said Prosecutor Loren Delp.

After his release from prison, he will spend 5 years in the Hendricks County Work Release Facility.
