INDIANAPOLIS — The man shot by an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police officer a week ago made his first court appearance Friday afternoon on the charges he faces from the incident. Dontriell Hood, 31, walked into the courtroom with his left arm completely wrapped in bandages for his gunshot wounds.
Hood is charged with criminal recklessness, being a felon with a handgun and resisting law enforcement after being shot by police in his driveway Nov. 10.
Judge Marshelle Dawkins Broadwell assigned Hood a public defender at his initial hearing. Hood is in jail on a seven-day hold, then could post a $20,000 surety bond with GPS monitoring.
Court records say Hood was firing shots from his house about 11 a.m. Nov. 10. Police say some bullets left holes in the house across the street.
When police arrived, they say Hood initially complied with orders to drop his gun and walk slowly toward them. But they say he then moved quickly back to his gun, tripped and fell, then crawled to his gun, grabbed it and was beginning to stand up when police shot him.
Hood was already a convicted felon on house arrest at the time. In April 2022, Hood was shot by police with a less lethal launcher in an incident very similar to what happened this month. In that incident, Hood was allegedly standing in Fall Creek near Keystone Avenue shooting at people fishing.
Family members that attended Friday's court hearing said Hood needs mental help.
