INDIANAPOLIS — A judge sentenced an Indianapolis man to 62 years in prison for the murder of another man at an east Indianapolis park in 2021.
Keith Bryant was found guilty of murder in the death of 26-year-old Keandre Coleman, as well as unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, after a two-day trial.
The shooting happened the afternoon of May 26, 2021, at West Montgomery Park, near East 34th Street and Emerson Avenue. Responding IMPD officers and Indianapolis park rangers found Coleman unresponsive in the driver's seat of a car with multiple gunshot wounds.
Witnesses told police Coleman was in his car when Bryant arrived in another car, and the two talked before Bryant approached Coleman and fired multiple shots, the prosecutor's office said.
Police discovered Bryant's phone pinged off a cellphone tower near the park at the time of the shooting, and Bryant's palmprints were found in Coleman's car.
On June 21, 2021, detectives saw Bryant driving the same car as the day of the shooting, and he was taken into custody on an outstanding warrant.
Coleman was taken to a local hospital in critical condition after the shooting. Bryant was originally arrested and charged with attempted murder.
IMPD said it became clear later in 2021 that Coleman would not survive his injuries.
It was at that point that the prosecutor dropped the charges against Bryant, who was already in jail on another case and expected to be in custody until the end of 2028.
Coleman died on May 3, 2022, and the Marion County Coroner's Office ruled his death a homicide. Bryant was formally charged with murder and unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon on July 29, 2022.
