INDIANAPOLIS — A man connected to a deadly 2019 crime spree in Indianapolis is heading to prison.
A judge sentenced Richard Garrett to 194 years in prison after he was convicted of murder and 22 other counts in the seven-day crime spree in October 2019.
The conviction came after a six-day trial, which was the second time Garrett was tried for the charges. The previous trial ended in a mistrial after Garrett allegedly hit his attorney in court.
Garrett was found guilty of:
- Murder
- Reckless Homicide
- Conspiracy to Commit Murder
- Robbery Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury
- Three counts of Criminal Recklessness
- Criminal Recklessness
- Seven counts Battery by Means of a Deadly Weapon
- Two counts Aggravated Battery
- Armed Robbery
- Four counts of Carrying a Handgun Without a License
Also charged in the crime spree were Delance Hatcher and Rashaana Farrow.
Hatcher is serving a 65-year sentence, and Farrow is serving 30 years.
The three committed multiple shootings, robberies, a carjacking, the murder of Devon Gillespie and a fatal hit-and-run that resulted in the death of Anthony Mack.
Garrett is the same man convicted of shooting and killing Fishers Police K-9 Harlej in November 2019. He was sentenced to six years for that crime.
“The defendants in this case continuously made dangerous and deadly decisions that endangered our community and yielded tragic results,” Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears said in a statement. “Garrett will spend the rest of his life in prison for his role in these crimes. With the third and final defendant sentenced, our thoughts remain with family and loved ones of Devon Gillespie and Anthony Mack and the surviving victims who were affected by these acts.”
