INDIANAPOLIS — A man was sentenced to 45 years in prison after trying to shoot an Edinburgh police officer.
Joshua Burton was convicted for his actions during a Dec. 27, 2023 incident where he tried to shoot Edinburgh Police Officer Clayton Embry with an AR-15 style weapon during a traffic stop.
Burton was convicted by a Johnson County jury on June 25, 2024 of attempted murder and a sentencing enhancement for the use of a firearm.
The judge heard testimonies from Embry, his family and Edinburgh Police Chief Doyne Little during the sentencing hearing, authorities said.
Officials said Deputy Prosecutor Bryan Smith argued for a sentence to exceed 50 years.
"We asked the judge to give a sentence that would ensure the future safety of the Edinburgh community and its police officers from Burton’s evil intents and actions, and this sentence achieves that goal,” Smith said.
“I am pleased to see this would be killer going away for a long, long time," Prosecutor Lance Hamner said. "For the next four decades, our citizens will not have to worry about Mr. Burton shooting at them or at the men and women who protect them.”
