BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Police in Bloomington arrested a man for allegedly robbing a gas station and bank on Tuesday.

Byron Johnson, 35, faces two formal counts of robbery, two counts of theft and one count of intimidation, according to online court records.

Shortly before 4 p.m. Dec. 19, Bloomington Police Department officers responded to the IU Credit Union in the 500 block of East 17th Street, near North Dunn Street, for a panic alarm. There they learned the bank had been robbed by a man who was no longer at the scene.

Officers didn't find the man nearby, but found Johnson's name on the back of a piece of paper that the suspect had handed to a bank employee during the robbery, police said. A search of police records indicated Johnson matched the description of the suspect the employee had given officers, the department said.

Johnson also matched the description of the suspect in a robbery of a Circle K gas station, which had occurred around 1 a.m. that day in the 4400 block of East 3rd Street, a few miles southeast of the bank.

Around 9:15 a.m. Dec. 20, officers found Johnson's car in the parking lot of a north Bloomington apartment complex. He was in the car at the time and taken into custody.

Bloomington police said officers found a sock with "a large amount of cash in it" that Johnson dropped while being searched.

Johnson was taken to the Bloomington Police Department to be interviewed, and then transported to the Monroe County Jail.

Online court records indicate an initial hearing in the case is scheduled for 1 p.m. Dec. 21.
